Can you activate the glitter roll manually without a switch?

A You can if you disconnect the drive band from the motor. But the toy was meant to be used with a switch.

Q Does the external switch need to be held down continuously for the toy to spin or can it be activated momentarily to initiate a certain amount of spinning time?

A To keep the glitter roll spinning the switch needs to be held down. The other option you could use a switch with a built in Latch/Timer function or our switch modifier product #605. With this you can set a time from 2 seconds up to 2 minutes.
